Michaels Rewards and Coupons Explained

The Michaels Rewards program is free and pays 3% to 9% back on eligible purchases, depending on how much you spend in a year. The fastest ways to save at Michaels are to join Rewards, take this week's coupon from the app, and link a 15% teacher or military discount or the 10% senior discount if you qualify. Quick answer: the fastest ways to save at Michaels

Join Michaels Rewards before your first purchase, because every eligible dollar then earns 3% to 9% back in Rewards vouchers. Then open the Michaels app for the current coupons, link a group discount if you are a teacher, military member or 55 or older, and spend $49 online for free ground shipping. Coupons do not cover clearance.

Here is the order to work through before each trip:

Sign in to Michaels Rewards. Give your phone number at the register or sign in online so the purchase earns Rewards.
Check the app and your email. Michaels says its coupons come through michaels.com, the app, email, text and mail, not in stores.
Use one coupon per item. Put the coupon on the most expensive regular price item in your basket.
Add your group discount. Teachers and military members get 15% off the entire purchase, including sale items.
Spend your vouchers within 32 days. Michaels Rewards vouchers expire 32 days after they are issued.

Michaels Rewards: points, perks and member pricing

Michaels Rewards is a free, three-tier program. Every new member starts in the Red tier and earns 3% back on eligible purchases. Spending $300 in 12 months moves you to Gold at 6%, and $1,000 moves you to Platinum at 9%. Rewards arrive as $5 vouchers that you spend on a later trip.

These are the current tiers from the Michaels Rewards terms, checked October 2026:

How Michaels Rewards vouchers work

For every $5 in Rewards you earn, Michaels issues a $5 Rewards voucher. The terms set these limits:

Vouchers last 32 days from the day they are issued, so plan your next trip inside that window.
Up to five vouchers can be used in one transaction.
You can earn up to $150 in Rewards a day.
Taxes and shipping do not earn Rewards, and clearance purchases only earn when you pay with the Michaels Card.
Rewards usually post within 48 hours after a purchase.
A balance below $5 expires if it does not reach $5 for 12 months in a row.

Tiers are checked every month for upgrades, and Michaels reassesses everyone in January. Once you reach Gold or Platinum, you keep that tier until the January review of the next calendar year.

Other member perks

Members also get weekly Rewards Specials, personalized Bonus Rewards offers, member events and receipt free returns, because your purchases are saved to your account. The Michaels Rewards page has also run sign up offers for new members. These change often, so check the page when you join.

Is the Michaels Card worth it? Only if you would pay it off each month. It earns 9% on purchases made with the card at any tier, the same rate a Platinum member earns on every purchase, so a Platinum member gains little from it.

Using coupons in store vs online

Michaels coupons work both in store and online, but the store does not hand them out at the door. Michaels says its coupons are offered on michaels.com, in the Michaels app, by direct mail and through its email and text programs. Show it on your phone in store, or apply it in your cart online.

The coupon policy sets the same rules for both:

One coupon per item. Only one coupon can be applied to any qualifying item.
One coupon of each type a day. Each coupon type can be used once in a transaction, and the limit is one of each type per day.
No competitor coupons. Michaels stopped accepting other stores' coupons on March 27, 2020.
No coupons on clearance. Clearance items are already at their final price.
Stock on hand. Coupon deals are limited to what the store has.

Online orders add one more saving: ground shipping is free on orders over $49, though oversize charges may apply and Alaska and Hawaii are excluded. If you need an item today, buy online and pick it up in store, so the coupon still applies and you skip the shipping fee.

The 40% off coupon: where to find it and exclusions

The 40% off coupon at Michaels is an "any one regular price item" coupon, which Michaels shortens to AORPI. It takes 40% off a single full-price item, so use it on the most expensive regular price item in your basket. You will find it in the Michaels app, emails and mailers when it runs, not printed in the store.

Michaels' coupon policy lists three common coupon types:

The same exclusions apply to all three. According to Michaels' coupon policy, checked October 2026, these coupons do not cover:

Sale and promotional items, and clearance
MichaelsPro Packs and custom framing
Michaels Photo Gifts, classes and parties
Beverages, candy, books and magazines
Christmas trees, cut to order fabric and gift cards
Craft technology brands such as Cricut, Glowforge and Silhouette, and sewing machine brands such as Brother and Singer

Michaels adds that exclusions can change, so read the fine print on the coupon you have. Past 40% coupons followed the same pattern: one from November 2022 excluded Great Buy items, clearance, custom framing and craft machines.

The best target for a 40% coupon is a regular price item that rarely goes on sale, such as a large tool, a storage cart or a premium paint set. If the item is already on sale for 30% off, the coupon will not apply, so the sale price is all you get.

Can you stack coupons? Price match and adjustment rules

You can use several different coupons in one Michaels purchase, one per item and one of each type a day, and add a teacher, military or senior discount on top. What you cannot do is stack a coupon on a price match, or put two coupons on the same item. Price matching follows separate online and in store rules.

What stacks at Michaels

One coupon per item, plus a group discount. Teachers and military members get 15% off the entire purchase, including sale items, and the senior discount is 10%.
Rewards vouchers on top. Your $5 Rewards vouchers work as payment, up to five per transaction.
Not two group discounts. The senior discount cannot be combined with the teacher or military discount, and each is limited to one per day.
Not a coupon on a price match. Michaels says price matches cannot be combined with other coupons.

Michaels price match and price guarantee

Michaels' coupon policy and price guarantee page, checked October 2026, describes two rules:

Online purchases: if you find a current lower price on an identical item within 7 days of buying on Michaels.com, call Michaels.com Customer Service at 1-800-642-4235 and it will adjust your payment. Eligible sources are Michaels' own ads and a list of online retailers that includes Hobby Lobby, Home Depot, Target and Walmart. Stores cannot adjust Michaels.com orders.
In store purchases: Michaels will match a lower price for the identical item advertised on Michaels.com, if the item is in stock online when you ask. Tell the team member at checkout. The policy page says stores do not match competitors' online or in store prices.

Clearance, closeout, damaged and used items are excluded, and so are items from third party marketplace sellers. Some older Michaels help pages still describe a broader competitor match, so if a match matters, ask a team member before you pay.

Teacher, military, senior and student discounts

Michaels has three standing group discounts, all linked to a free Michaels Rewards account. Verified teachers and military members get 15% off their entire purchase, including sale items. Customers 55 and older get 10% off. We found no student discount on Michaels' own site, so students should rely on coupons and Rewards instead.

How they work in practice:

Teachers sync their teacher status to Michaels Rewards once, and the discount then applies automatically in store and online. See our full list of teacher discounts for other classroom supply stores.
Military members link their status the same way. Michaels says a valid military ID works in store for the first three purchases while verification completes, and the discount is limited to one per day. Our list of military discounts compares Michaels with Home Depot, Lowe's and others.
Seniors verify their age online through a third party, which may ask for a government document such as a driver's license, or show ID in store. Our senior discounts list covers other stores with an age discount.

All three group discounts work on sale items, which makes them more useful than a coupon during a sale week.

Sale cycle: frames, yarn, Christmas decor and Black Friday

Michaels runs weekly ad deals in store and online all year, and the biggest discounts come around Black Friday. In 2025, its Black Friday page advertised up to 70% off custom frame collections and a buy one, get one 50% off yarn deal in store. Michaels does not publish a full sale calendar, so check the weekly ad.

Custom framing

Custom framing is excluded from regular coupons, so it only gets cheaper during framing sales. Michaels' 2025 Black Friday page offered up to 70% off custom frame collections, with exclusions such as Custom Frame Express, Custom Frame Value Packages and same day or expedited orders. If you have a framing project, wait for a framing sale rather than trying to use a coupon.

Yarn

Yarn is one of the categories Michaels promotes most. The 2025 Black Friday yarn deal was buy one, get one 50% off, in store only. Between sales, a teacher, military or senior discount still works on yarn, because those discounts cover sale items too.

Christmas decor and seasonal items

Seasonal items that move to clearance are final sale and cannot take coupons, so a clearance price is the price you pay. If you are buying decor before the season, a regular price coupon on one large item usually saves more than waiting.

Michaels return policy in short

Michaels accepts returns within 60 days of purchase for new, unused items in their original packaging, in store or through your online account. Clearance items are final sale, and cut fabric cannot be returned. Without a receipt, Michaels refunds the lowest price the item sold for in the past 90 days, as a store return card.

MichaelsPro orders may carry restocking fees.

Keep receipts for big purchases such as craft machines, frames and holiday decor, because a no receipt return at a sale price can cost you money.
