The only fair way to compare store rewards programs is to turn each one into cents back per dollar you spend, then check how and when you can actually use the reward. Do that, and the picture is clear: Kohl's Rewards pays 5 cents per dollar, CVS ExtraCare 2 cents, Sephora 2 cents, myWalgreens and Old Navy's Encore about 1 cent, and Ulta between 3 and 6.25 cents depending on how long you save. Bath & Body Works can pay the most of all, but only if you choose the right free item. This guide shows the math for each program at three spending levels, the expiry rules that can wipe out your rewards, and when a paid membership is worth its fee. Every rate comes from the store's own terms, linked below. For more ways to cut everyday costs, see our money saving tips.

Worked example: what each program pays at $500, $2,000 and $5,000 a year

Here is what you would get back from a year of spending at each store, using the rates above. The math is shown so you can swap in your own numbers.

Program$500 a year$2,000 a year$5,000 a year
Kohl's Rewards (5%)$500 × 5% = $25$2,000 × 5% = $100$5,000 × 5% = $250
CVS ExtraCare (2%)$500 × 2% = $10$2,000 × 2% = $40$5,000 × 2% = $100
myWalgreens (1%)$500 × 1% = $5$2,000 × 1% = $20$5,000 × 1% = $50
Sephora Beauty Insider500 points = $102,000 points = 4 × $10 = $405,000 points = 2 Rouge Rewards × $100 = $200
Ulta Beauty Rewards (base rate)500 points = $17.502,000 points = $1255,000 points = $125 + $125 + $50 = $300
Macy's Star Rewards (Bronze)500 points, not yet $102,000 points = 2 × $10 = $205,000 points = 5 × $10 = $50
Old Navy Encore (Core)2,500 points = $510,000 points = $2025,000 points = $50
Bath & Body Works (best case)5 rewards × $18.95 = $94.7520 × $18.95 = $37950 × $18.95 = $947.50
Michaels Rewards (tiered)$300 × 3% + $200 × 6% = $21$9 + $700 × 6% + $1,000 × 9% = $141$9 + $42 + $4,000 × 9% = $411

How to read it:

  • Sephora at $5,000 assumes you reach the Rouge tier, which Sephora's terms set at $1,000 a year, and trade 2,500 points for each $100 Rouge Reward. Below Rouge, 5,000 points are worth $100 as Beauty Insider Cash.
  • Ulta uses the base 1 point per $1. Platinum ($500 a year) and Diamond ($1,200 a year) members earn 1.25 and 1.5 points per $1, so real numbers at $2,000 and $5,000 are higher.
  • Macy's at $500 never reaches the 1,000 points needed for $10 within the year. The points carry over as long as you keep making qualifying purchases, but nothing comes back that year.
  • Bath & Body Works is the best case: it assumes every reward is used on an item with an original price of exactly $18.95. Redeem on a cheaper item and the value drops.
  • Michaels assumes you move up a tier as you cross $300 and $1,000 in a year and earn the higher rate from then on.
  • These numbers only count if you use the rewards before they expire. A $5 Kohl's Cash coupon you forget about is worth nothing after 30 days.

Who should skip each program

ProgramSkip it if
Kohl's RewardsYou visit Kohl's less than once a month, because each Kohl's Cash reward lasts only 30 days
CVS ExtraCareYou only go to CVS for prescriptions and rarely buy anything else there
myWalgreensYou rarely buy Walgreens brand items; at 1% on everything else the rewards are small
Sephora Beauty InsiderYou spend under $500 a year at Sephora and want cash back; 2 cents per dollar is modest
Ulta Beauty RewardsYou need to redeem small amounts often; 100 points only take $3 off
Macy's Star Rewards (Bronze)You spend under $1,000 a year at Macy's; each $10 reward takes $1,000 of spending
Old Navy EncoreYou expect real cash back; 500 points are worth $1, so join for free shipping on $50+ instead
My Bath & Body WorksYou do not buy the items the reward covers, or you will not shop again within 90 days
Michaels RewardsYou shop Michaels once or twice a year; $5 vouchers expire after 32 days
Target CircleNever: it is free and has no expiring points, just use the deals you need

Stacking at Kohl's: a worked example

Kohl's is the easiest store to stack at, because it applies discounts in a fixed order and you still earn rewards on what you pay. Here is the order, with dollar amounts for a jacket that normally costs $120:

  1. Sale price. The jacket is on sale for $100.
  2. Kohl's Cash. Apply a $10 Kohl's Cash coupon. Dollar-off coupons come before percent-off codes. You now owe $90.
  3. One percent-off code. If a 20% off code is running, it applies to the $90: $90 × 20% = $18 off. You now pay $72.
  4. Kohl's Rewards. You earn 5% of what you paid: $72 × 5% = $3.60, which builds toward your next $5 Kohl's Cash.
  5. Kohl's Cash event. If you buy during an earn period, Kohl's gives $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 spent, so $72 earns $10 for your next trip.

Total: you paid $72 for a $120 jacket and earned $13.60 toward future purchases. Kohl's does not let two percent-off codes share an order, and Sephora at Kohl's is excluded from Kohl's coupons and Kohl's Cash. Our Kohl's vs Macy's guide explains the rules in detail, and our guide on how to stack coupons covers other stores.

A paid membership is worth it only if what you save in a year is more than its fee. These are the fees on each store's own pages in October 2026, and the spending or usage at which each one pays for itself.

MembershipFeeWhat you get backBreak-even
Costco Executive$130 a year, $65 more than Gold Star2% reward on most purchases, up to $1,250 a year$65 ÷ 2% = $3,250 a year at Costco
Target Circle 360$99 a year ($49 with a Circle Card)Free same day delivery on orders over $35, instead of $9.99 each$99 ÷ $9.99 = 10 deliveries a year (5 at $49)
Walmart+$98 a year or $12.95 a monthFree delivery from stores on $35+, up to 10 cents off a gallon of fuelFuel alone: $98 ÷ $0.10 = 980 gallons a year; delivery: $98 ÷ the fee you would otherwise pay per order
CVS ExtraCare Plus$48 a year or $5 a month20% off CVS Health brand products$48 ÷ 20% = $240 of CVS Health brand items a year
My Best Buy Plus$29.99 a yearAbout 1% back, member prices, 60 day returns, free 2 day shippingRewards alone: $29.99 ÷ 1% = about $3,000 a year at Best Buy
Amazon Prime$139 a year or $14.99 a monthFree fast delivery, Prime Video and Prime event pricesDepends on how much you use Prime Video and delivery; without Prime, eligible orders of $35 or more ship free

Sources: Costco membership, Target Circle 360, Walmart+, CVS, Best Buy and Amazon pages, checked October 2026. Discounted versions exist: Prime for Young Adults is $7.49 a month and Prime Access $6.99 a month for people on qualifying government assistance, while Walmart+ Assist and Walmart+ Student are $49 a year.

The quick rule: if a membership's main benefit is free delivery, count how many deliveries you actually paid for last year. If that number is below the break-even, skip it.

Rewards stack with almost everything

Store rewards are earned on what you pay after discounts, so you lose nothing by stacking. The order that works at most stores:

  1. Sale price or member price.
  2. Store coupon or promo code, usually one per order.
  3. Store rewards earned on what you pay, and old rewards redeemed as payment.
  4. Cash back portal, started before you shop online. See our guide to cash back shopping.
  5. Rewards credit card, only if you pay the balance in full.

Store rewards programs FAQ

Which store rewards program pays the most?

Measured in cents back per dollar, Kohl's Rewards pays a flat 5 cents and Ulta pays 3 to 6.25 cents per point depending on how many points you redeem at once, as of October 2026. Bath & Body Works can pay up to 18.95 cents per dollar, but only if you redeem every reward on an item with an original price of $18.95.

Are Old Navy Encore points worth much?

Not much in cash terms. Encore earns 5 points per $1 at the Core and Premier tiers, and Gap's Encore page says 500 points equal a $1 reward, so that is about 1 cent per dollar. Join for the free shipping on $50 or more and member offers.

Do store rewards expire?

Most do. Kohl's Cash from Kohl's Rewards is valid 30 days, Macy's Star Money 30 days, Michaels vouchers 32 days, Bath & Body Works rewards 90 days, CVS ExtraBucks 90 days after the end of the quarter they are issued, and Walgreens Cash 12 months, as of October 2026.

Is Costco Executive worth it?

It pays for itself once you spend $3,250 a year at Costco. The upgrade costs $65 more than Gold Star, and 2% of $3,250 is $65. The reward is capped at $1,250 a year.

Is Target Circle 360 worth it?

If you use same day delivery at least 10 times a year, or 5 times with a Circle Card that brings the fee to $49. Without it, Target charges $9.99 per same day delivery order.

Which rewards programs are worth joining if I shop rarely?

The free ones with no short expiry: Target Circle, Sephora Beauty Insider and Ulta Beauty Rewards for occasional shoppers. Programs that pay in short-lived coupons, like Kohl's Cash at 30 days or Michaels vouchers at 32 days, only pay off if you shop often.
