Holiday shopping is not one sale, it is a season that runs from October member events to the end of January return deadlines, and each store plays by different rules. Some refund you if their price drops after you buy, some extend returns well into January, and some do neither. This guide puts those rules side by side for seven big retailers, so you know where it is safe to buy early and where to wait. Everything below was checked on each retailer's own pages in October 2026, and we mark anything not yet announced.

What the table tells you
- Safe to buy early: Target, Best Buy, Kohl's, Macy's and Nike will refund you if their own price drops within their window, so buying a gift in early November is low risk there. Screenshot the price you paid.
- Wait for the deal: Amazon and Walmart.com do not refund a price drop on regular items, so if you can, buy those during the sale itself.
- Watch the return dates: Amazon, Kohl's and Macy's run holiday returns to January 31, 2027. Best Buy's 2025 window ended earlier, January 15, so check its 2026 terms before you count on January.
- Best Buy's blackout: Best Buy does not match competitors from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the following Monday, which is exactly Black Friday week.

On top of that, the Kohl's purchase earned 5% in Kohl's Rewards ($30 × 5% = $1.50), and during a Kohl's Cash event the $30 spent would not reach the $50 needed for another $10. The lesson is in the Nike and Best Buy rows: buying early at a store with a price adjustment cost nothing extra, because the refund arrived when the sale did.

Doorbusters: read the fine print
A doorbuster is a very low price, often in limited quantities, used to bring shoppers in on a sale day. Before you plan around one, check the exact model number, because doorbuster TVs and laptops can be different models from the ones reviewed online, and check the quantity limits in the ad. Which stores refund the difference if the price drops?
As of October 2026, Target matches its own lower price within 14 days, Nike members get a refund within 14 days on online orders, Kohl's refunds within 2 weeks with a receipt, Macy's within 10 days of your order, and Best Buy matches its own lower price during your return period. Amazon and Walmart.com do not refund price drops on regular items.
What are the holiday return deadlines for 2026?
Amazon, Kohl's and Macy's accept most holiday purchases until January 31, 2027, with Amazon's Apple products due by January 15, 2027. Walmart says most items bought October 1 to December 31 can be returned until January 31. Best Buy and Target had not posted their 2026 holiday return terms when we checked.
