TV makers usually unveil new models at CES in January, and they reach stores in the spring, which pushes last year's sets down. Compare the exact model number across stores before you buy.

When is the best time to buy a laptop?

The fall sale season and back-to-school are the strongest windows for laptops. In 2026, Dell's student offer runs until November 2, its Top Tech Event took up to $500 off PCs in October, and Black Friday follows on November 27. A new model launch is another good moment, since the outgoing version often drops in price and is nearly as good.

What laptop specs do you actually need?

Should you buy a laptop from Dell or Best Buy?

Buy from the store that gives the lowest final price on the exact model, after discounts, rewards and price protection. When to wait and when to buy now

Wait if a new version of the product has been announced, because the previous model usually gets cheaper and is often almost as good. Buy now if a store offers price protection, because you can claim the difference if the price falls later. Avoid buying the newest phone or console at launch if price is your priority.

• Wait: a successor has been announced, or Black Friday is only weeks away and the item is not urgent.
• Buy now: the item is on a genuine sale, you need it, and the store will refund a later price drop.
• Skip the rush: brand new phones and consoles rarely see big discounts in their first months.

Use price matching and price drop refunds

Price protection lets you buy before the biggest sale without losing out. As of October 2026, Best Buy matches key competitors on identical new products and its own lower price during your return period, and Dell refunds the difference if Dell.com's price drops within 30 days. Keep your receipt and check the price again before your window closes.

Two exclusions matter. Best Buy does not match competitor prices from the Thursday before Thanksgiving through the following Monday, and it excludes open-box, refurbished, clearance and Marketplace items, so its protection only applies to new products. 1. The warranty: how long, and who provides it.
2. The return window: open-box at Best Buy follows the same policy as new; Dell Outlet allows 30 days.

• Military, medical workers and first responders at Dell: 10%, verified in your account.
