Amazon Resale: Graded Returns and Open Box Items
Terms & details
Customer returns and open-box items graded Like New, Very Good, Good or Acceptable, with a 30-day return window.
Amazon Outlet sells markdowns, closeouts and overstock, Amazon Resale sells graded returns and open-box items with a 30-day return window, and Amazon Renewed sells inspected, refurbished electronics with a 90-day guarantee, or one year for Renewed Premium. Each one can beat the regular price, but each fits a different kind of purchase. Every policy below was checked on Amazon's own help pages in October 2026. For more ways to save, see our money saving tips.
Quick answer: which Amazon discount section to use
Use Amazon Outlet for new items at clearance prices, Amazon Resale for everyday items where a scuffed box does not matter, and Amazon Renewed for phones, laptops and tablets where a guarantee matters most. Buy new on sale when you want a full manufacturer warranty or when the new price drops close to the used one.

| If you are buying | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen gadgets, home decor, clothing | Amazon Outlet | New items at markdown and overstock prices |
| Books, toys, small appliances, tools | Amazon Resale | Graded returns with a 30-day return window |
| Phones, tablets, laptops, headphones | Amazon Renewed | Inspected items with a 90-day or 1-year guarantee |
| Anything you want under full warranty | New, during a sale | Price drops on new items often close the gap |
Three habits make all of them safer:
- Check who sells it. Amazon's coupons and return coverage differ between items sold by Amazon and items from other sellers.
- Read the condition note. Resale and Renewed listings describe the grade and what may be missing.
- Compare with the new price. A used item at 10% off is rarely worth giving up the full warranty.
Amazon Outlet: what it is and how to find it
Amazon Outlet is Amazon's page for markdowns, closeouts and overstock deals, gathered in one place at amazon.com/outlet. It covers electronics, home decor, clothing, kitchen gadgets and more, split into sections such as Shoes Outlet, Kitchen Outlet and Tools and Home Improvement Outlet, and Amazon says new deals appear every day.

How to use the Outlet well:
- Go to the page directly. Searching Amazon for "overstock outlet" returns ordinary search results mixed with coupon items, not the Outlet itself.
- Filter by category first. The Outlet is huge, and the category sections are the fastest way to find something you actually need.
- Treat the discount with care. The crossed-out price is Amazon's reference price, so compare it with the price history before you decide a deal is real.
- Check the condition line. Outlet items are listed like regular products, so the condition and seller shown on each listing are what count.
The Outlet is separate from Amazon Resale. The Outlet navigation lists Resale beside it, and Resale is the place for used and open-box items. Our guide on how to find the best deals explains how to judge any markdown, not just Amazon's.
Amazon Resale (formerly Warehouse Deals): condition grades and returns
Amazon Resale, the new name for Amazon Warehouse Deals, sells customer returns, open-box items and products damaged in Amazon's warehouses. Amazon checks each item for function, cosmetic damage, missing accessories and packaging, then grades it Like New, Very Good, Good or Acceptable. Lower grades get deeper discounts, and purchases come with a 30-day return window.
| Grade | What Amazon says to expect | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Like New | Box usually opened or damaged; the item inside is in near-perfect condition | Gifts, if the packaging does not matter |
| Very Good | Light use, small scratches or smudges, nothing that affects performance; packaging may be replaced | Most everyday buys |
| Good | Fully works; moderate wear, minor cosmetic damage; may miss some accessories | Items you will use hard |
| Acceptable | Works for its main purpose; clear signs of use such as dents or scratches; minimum accessories only | Spare or backup items |
Amazon says electronics sold through Resale are powered on, tested and factory reset during the check (Amazon Resale conditions, checked October 2026). If an item does not match the condition on the listing, you can return it within 30 days for a full refund. Amazon cannot always swap it for an item in the same condition, but it may offer something similar.

Two things to watch:
- Amazon devices in Resale come with a 30-day money-back guarantee instead of the limited warranty that new devices get.
- Missing accessories are common in Good and Acceptable grades. A missing charger can cancel out the discount, so read the condition note before you buy.
Our guide to Best Buy open box compares a similar grading system, if you want to price the same item at both stores.
Amazon Renewed: warranty, grades and is it worth it
Amazon Renewed sells pre-owned and refurbished products, mostly electronics, that have been inspected and tested to work like new. The Amazon Renewed Guarantee lets you return a Renewed item within 90 days for a full refund or a replacement, and Renewed Premium items get one year. Return shipping is free, but theft, accidental damage and tampering are not covered.
| Renewed grade | Guarantee, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Renewed Premium | 1 year from receipt |
| Excellent | 90 days |
| Good | 90 days |
| Acceptable | 90 days |
Amazon's help page lists the rules (Amazon Renewed Guarantee, checked October 2026). Before you send a device back, you must back up your data, turn off phone tracking and factory reset it. If you get a refund or replacement and do not return the item, Amazon may charge you the original price. Renewed Amazon devices carry the same one-year limited warranty as new Amazon devices.
Is Renewed worth it? It depends on the item:
- Worth it: phones and tablets a model or two old, Kindles, headphones, and laptops for school, where the guarantee covers early faults.
- Think twice: batteries age even when the rest of the device is fine, so check the listing for battery details on phones and laptops.
- Usually skip: items that cost little new, where the savings are a few dollars and the guarantee is shorter than a new warranty.
The same logic applies at other stores. Our guides to Dell Outlet vs refurbished vs new and Nike Refurbished shoes show how other brands handle refurbished stock.
Outlet vs Resale vs Renewed vs new
The four options differ in who inspected the item and how long you are covered. New items carry a maker's warranty, Renewed items carry Amazon's 90-day or one-year guarantee, Resale items carry a 30-day return window, and Outlet items follow the return policy shown on each listing because they are mostly new markdowns.
| Question | Outlet | Resale | Renewed | New |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Has someone used it? | Usually not | Often | Yes, then inspected | No |
| Who grades it? | Not graded | Amazon | Amazon's Renewed program | Not graded |
| Return or guarantee | The listing's policy | 30 days | 90 days, Premium 1 year | Normal returns |
| Best for | Home, kitchen, clothing | Books, toys, tools | Phones, laptops, tablets | Big purchases you keep for years |
| Biggest risk | A fake "was" price | Missing accessories | Battery wear | Paying more than needed |
A simple rule: the more the item costs and the more it can fail, the more the guarantee is worth. For a $20 kitchen tool, Resale's 30 days is plenty. For a $600 laptop, Renewed Premium's year, or a new laptop on sale, protects you better.
The Amazon coupons page and Subscribe and Save
Amazon's digital coupons and Subscribe and Save are the two discounts that work on regular new items. Coupons are clipped on product pages, in search results and on the Amazon Deals page, and Subscribe and Save gives up to 15% off when five or more products arrive in one auto-delivery to one address.
Coupons. Click "Clip Coupon" on a product and the discount applies at checkout to qualifying orders. Amazon's coupon terms say coupons are time limited, generally work only on items sold and shipped by Amazon, are limited to one per customer, and may be deducted from your refund if you return the item (Amazon coupon terms, checked October 2026). Some Subscribe and Save coupons need one more step: choose the Subscribe and Save option on the product page.
Subscribe and Save. Pick a delivery schedule for items you buy regularly. Amazon says you get up to 15% off when five or more products arrive in one auto-delivery to one address, and you can change or cancel subscriptions at any time.
| Tip | Why it works |
|---|---|
| Group five or more items on the same delivery date | That earns the top discount |
| Skip a delivery instead of cancelling | Keeps the item at its subscription price for next time |
| Check the price before each delivery | Subscription prices can change between deliveries |
| Cancel after the first box if you only need one | You can cancel at any time |
A clipped coupon plus Subscribe and Save is usually the lowest price Amazon offers on household basics, because both discounts can apply to the same order.
Today's Deals and Lightning Deals
Today's Deals is Amazon's daily sale page, and Lightning Deals are the short, limited-stock discounts inside it. Amazon says a Lightning Deal runs until it ends or until all the deal stock is claimed, with one per customer, and once it sells out you can usually still buy the item at its regular Amazon price.
How Lightning Deals work, according to Amazon's help pages:
- Add the item to your cart. It holds at the deal price for 15 minutes.
- Check out with the Proceed to Checkout button. Amazon says using 1-Click stops the Lightning Deal from applying.
- Join the waitlist if it sells out. A waitlist does not guarantee the deal; if a unit frees up, you get a short time to add it to your cart.
- Expect one unit per deal. Lightning Deals apply to one unit of each product unless the deal says otherwise, and not to shipping or tax.
During Prime Day and Prime Big Deal Days, Lightning Deals are only for Prime members (Amazon Lightning Deal terms, checked October 2026). The countdown timer is the deal's sales pitch, not a reason to buy. If the item was not on your list before you saw the timer, let it go.
| Deal type | Where to find it | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Today's Deals | The Today's Deals page | Reference prices that are higher than the usual price |
| Lightning Deals | Today's Deals and the Lightning Deals page | 15-minute cart hold and one unit per customer |
| Clipped coupons | Product pages and search results | Usually only for items sold and shipped by Amazon |
| Outlet markdowns | amazon.com/outlet | Check the condition and seller on each listing |
Share Prime instead of paying twice. Amazon Family, the feature formerly called Amazon Household, lets one Prime member share many Prime benefits with one other adult at the same address, plus teens and up to four child profiles. Only one adult needs the membership, so two adults in one home should not pay for two Prime plans.
Track Amazon prices and price history
Amazon does not show a price history on its product pages, so you need a tracker to know whether today's price is low. Browser extensions and price history sites such as Keepa and CamelCamelCamel chart past prices and can email you when an item drops. Amazon itself does not run these tools.
How to use price history before you buy:
- Look at the last few months, not the last week. A "deal" can still be above the item's usual price.
- Note the lowest price in the past. Big sales such as Prime Big Deal Days and Black Friday usually set those lows.
- Set an alert at a price you would pay. Then stop checking and wait for the email.
- Compare used and new on the same chart. Some trackers show Resale and Renewed prices too.
Amazon's own big sale this fall has passed: Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6 and 7, 2026 for Prime members (Amazon's Prime Big Deal Days announcement). For the next one, our Black Friday shopping plan shows how to track prices from October onward.
Does Amazon price match? Price drops after you buy
No. Amazon's own help page says it compares prices to competitors itself and does not offer price matching. It also does not refund the difference if a regular item's price drops after you buy. The one exception is the Pre-order Price Guarantee, which refunds the difference automatically on pre-orders sold by Amazon.com.
| Situation | What Amazon does, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| A competitor has a lower price | No price match |
| The price drops after you buy a regular item | No price adjustment |
| You pre-ordered and the price drops before release | Charged the lowest price Amazon.com offered between your order and the end of release day |
The Pre-order Price Guarantee covers physical pre-orders sold by Amazon.com, not other sellers, and not items already released (Amazon pricing and price matching, checked October 2026). If a price drops on something you just bought and it is still within the return window, returning it and buying again at the lower price is the only route, so check the return terms first.
The other way to cut the cost of a new device is to trade in the old one, covered in the next section.
Amazon Trade-In: lower the cost of your next device
Amazon Trade-In pays you an Amazon.com gift card for eligible devices you no longer use, including Kindles, Fire tablets, Fire TV and Echo devices, eero routers, phones, video games and other electronics. Some trade-ins also add a limited-time rebate or instant payment toward a new Amazon device, which makes an upgrade noticeably cheaper.
How it works, according to Amazon's help pages (checked October 2026):
- Get a quote. Choose your device and answer questions about its condition to see an estimated value.
- Send or drop it off. Ship it free with a prepaid UPS label, or drop off an eligible Amazon device at a participating Trade-In location, within 45 days of creating the order.
- Reset it first. Deregister the device, remove any lock or passcode, and factory reset it so none of your data goes with it.
- Get paid. Amazon verifies shipped devices within 20 business days, and some trade-ins qualify for instant payment when you create the order.
| Rule | What Amazon says |
|---|---|
| Final value | Depends on the model, generation and condition |
| Condition mismatch | You pick a lower value or get the device back |
| Promotional discount | One per account, per device category, per calendar quarter |
| Phones and video games | Not eligible for the discount promotions |
| Financed devices | Must be owned outright, or they are sent back |
| Address | A valid return address in the contiguous United States |
Trade-in works best for Amazon's own devices, because those are the ones that earn the extra rebate toward a new model. For phones, compare Amazon's quote with your carrier's trade-in offer before you ship (Amazon Trade-In help).
Mistakes to avoid when buying used on Amazon
Most bad experiences with Amazon's discount sections come from the same few mistakes: not checking who the seller is, not reading the condition note, waiting too long to test the item, and forgetting that coupons and guarantees have their own rules. Each one is easy to avoid once you know it.
- Buying from the wrong seller. Amazon's coupons usually work only on items sold and shipped by Amazon, and Amazon Resale's return coverage applies to Amazon's own listings. Third-party sellers relisting graded returns set their own terms.
- Skipping the condition note. In Resale's Good and Acceptable grades, accessories may be missing. In Renewed, the grade decides if you get 90 days or a full year of guarantee.
- Testing too late. The Resale window is 30 days and the standard Renewed guarantee is 90 days. Test everything in the first week, including chargers and buttons.
- Returning without resetting. Renewed returns need your data backed up, tracking turned off and a factory reset first.
- Forgetting the coupon. If you return an item bought with a clipped coupon, Amazon may deduct the coupon value from your refund.
- Comparing with the wrong price. Compare a used price with the new item's sale price, not its list price.
Prime Access, student and EBT discounts
Amazon sells Prime at a lower price to three groups. Prime for Young Adults is for 18 to 24 year olds and higher education students, at $7.49 a month or $69 a year after a six-month trial. Prime Access is for people on qualifying government assistance, such as SNAP EBT or Medicaid, at $6.99 a month instead of $14.99.
| Plan | Price, as of October 2026 | Who qualifies | Trial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular Prime | $14.99 a month or $139 a year | Anyone | 30 days for those who qualify |
| Prime for Young Adults | $7.49 a month or $69 a year | Ages 18 to 24, or higher education students | Six months |
| Prime Access | $6.99 a month | Recipients of programs such as SNAP EBT, Medicaid, SSI, WIC and TANF, or by income | 30 days |
For Prime Access, you upload a photo of your eligibility document, such as an EBT card or Medicaid letter, and add a payment method, because the benefit itself cannot pay for the membership. You reverify every 12 months (Amazon on Prime Access). Our list of student discounts covers Prime for Young Adults alongside Spotify, Hulu and other student plans, and our Amazon coupons page lists current Amazon deals.
Amazon Outlet, Resale and Renewed FAQ
What is Amazon Outlet?
Amazon Outlet is the part of Amazon that gathers markdowns, closeouts and overstock deals in one place, at amazon.com/outlet. It covers electronics, home decor, clothing, kitchen gadgets and more, with new deals added every day, as of October 2026. It is separate from Amazon Resale, which sells used and open-box items.
Is Amazon Resale the same as Amazon Warehouse?
Yes. Amazon Resale is the new name for Amazon Warehouse Deals. It sells customer returns, open-box items and products damaged in Amazon's warehouses, graded Like New, Very Good, Good or Acceptable. Purchases come with a 30-day return window, and you can return an item that does not match its listed condition for a full refund.
Is Amazon Renewed worth it?
Often, for electronics. Renewed items are inspected and tested, and the Amazon Renewed Guarantee lets you return them within 90 days, or one year for Renewed Premium, as of October 2026. It is best for phones, tablets and laptops a model or two old. Check the battery details and compare with the new sale price first.
Does Amazon price match?
No. Amazon's help page says it compares prices with competitors itself and does not offer price matching. It also does not adjust the price if a regular item drops after you buy. The exception is the Pre-order Price Guarantee, which charges you the lowest Amazon.com price between your order and the end of release day.
How do Amazon coupons work?
Click "Clip Coupon" on a product page, in search results or on the Amazon Deals page, and the discount applies at checkout. Coupons are time limited, usually only for items sold and shipped by Amazon, and limited to one per customer. If you return the item, Amazon may deduct the coupon value from your refund, as of October 2026.
How much do you save with Subscribe and Save?
Amazon says Subscribe and Save gives up to 15% off when five or more products arrive in one auto-delivery to one address, as of October 2026. You choose how often each item arrives and can skip, change or cancel at any time. Check the price before each delivery, because subscription prices can change between orders.
Who qualifies for Prime Access?
Prime Access is Amazon's discounted Prime for people on qualifying government assistance, such as SNAP EBT, Medicaid, SSI, WIC and TANF, or who qualify by household income. It costs $6.99 a month instead of $14.99, with a 30-day trial, and you reverify every 12 months. You upload a photo of your eligibility document to apply.
