If you want a Dell laptop or desktop for less, you have three options: buy new, buy from Dell Outlet, or buy from Dell Refurbished. The names sound alike, but the products and the protection you get are quite different.
The short version
- Dell Outlet sells recent models that were returned, cancelled or overstocked. They are inspected, repaired if needed and sold as certified refurbished, often with a warranty similar to new.
- Dell Refurbished focuses on older, previously used machines, often off-lease business models. Prices are lower, but warranty and return terms are usually weaker.
- New costs the most, but you get the latest configuration, the full warranty and Dell's standard return policy.
Dell Outlet: recent models, close-to-new protection
Dell Outlet stock is mostly current or recent generations. Items are typically labeled:
- Certified Refurbished: returned products that were tested, repaired if needed and cleaned to meet Dell's standards.
- Scratch & Dent: the same certified refurbished process, but with cosmetic blemishes that do not affect performance. Dell says these should not have screen scratches or damaged keys.
Dell Outlet has offered a 30-day return policy with free returns, and its machines often come with a one-year or longer limited warranty. Check the terms on the product page before you buy.
Dell Refurbished: older machines, lower prices
Dell Refurbished sells previously used systems, often business laptops coming off corporate leases. These are tough machines and can be excellent value for school, office work or a spare computer.
The trade-offs:
- Older hardware. Check the processor generation and the battery condition.
- Shorter standard warranty, sometimes with an option to extend it at checkout.
- Stricter returns. Restocking fees or return shipping costs can apply, so read the policy first.
Rule of thumb: Outlet for a nearly new machine at a discount; Refurbished for the lowest possible price on a capable older model.
When buying new is the better deal
New can actually win when:
- Dell is running a big sale. During Black Friday or back-to-school, new prices with a coupon can come close to Outlet prices.
- You need a specific configuration that is not in Outlet stock.
- You qualify for a discount program such as student, military or member pricing, which usually applies to new systems.
Check our Dell coupons and deals before you buy, and compare the exact model and specs, not just the price.
A quick checklist before you buy
- Compare the processor generation, RAM and storage with the new equivalent.
- Read the warranty length and whether it can be extended.
- Read the return window and any restocking fee.
- For laptops, check the battery and screen condition notes.

Dell Outlet and Refurbished FAQ
Is Dell Outlet the same as Dell Refurbished?
No. Dell Outlet mainly sells recent models as certified refurbished or scratch-and-dent items. Dell Refurbished mainly sells older, previously used systems at lower prices.
Is a Dell Outlet laptop as good as new?
Functionally, it should be. Outlet machines are inspected and repaired to Dell's standards, and Scratch & Dent units differ only in looks.
Can I use a coupon at Dell Outlet?
Sometimes. Outlet and Refurbished run their own coupon promotions, but regular Dell.com codes and student discounts usually do not apply there.
