Home Depot penny items are real but unofficial: Home Depot does not publish a penny list, a penny policy or any page explaining them, so the lists online come from shoppers, not the store. The savings you can count on at Home Depot are written policies: a price match on identical in-stock items, a 30-day price adjustment, a 10% military discount and daily Special Buy deals. Every policy below was checked on Home Depot's own site in October 2026. For more ways to save, see our money saving tips.
Quick answer: the best ways to save at Home Depot
The most dependable ways to save at Home Depot are its price match on identical in-stock items from stores such as Lowe's, Amazon and Walmart, a price adjustment if the price drops within 30 days of your purchase, the 10% military discount, the Special Buy of the Day online, and free appliance delivery on orders of $396 or more.

| Way to save | What you get, as of October 2026 | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Price match | The lower price on an identical in-stock item from a listed competitor | Anyone |
| Price adjustment | The difference if Home Depot's price drops within 30 days | Anyone with proof of purchase |
| Military discount | 10% off eligible purchases, up to $400 a year | Active duty, veterans, spouses |
| Special Buy of the Day | One-day online deals on select items | Online shoppers |
| Appliance delivery | Free delivery on appliance purchases of $396 or more | Appliance buyers |
| Pro Xtra | Free loyalty program with Perks and volume pricing | Contractors and frequent buyers |
| Seasonal events | Spring Black Friday, holiday sales and Black Friday | Big seasonal buys |
Penny items: how they work and the store rules
A penny item is a product that rings up at one cent at the register. Home Depot says nothing about penny items on its website: there is no penny list, no penny policy and no promise to sell anything at a penny, so treat every penny story online as a shopper's report, not a store rule.
What we could and could not confirm on Home Depot's own site in October 2026:
| Claim you will see online | What Home Depot's site says |
|---|---|
| "Home Depot has an official penny list" | No penny list or penny page exists on homedepot.com |
| "Stores must sell penny items" | No policy says so; the store decides what it sells |
| "Price endings tell you the next markdown" | Home Depot does not publish what clearance price endings mean |
| "Search 0.01 on the website" | The site has a page that groups products under "0.01", tied to free shipping on qualified items, not penny pricing |
So how should a shopper treat penny items? Honestly, as a long shot. Shopper communities report that penny items are products the store has decided to pull from the shelves, which is why they are rare and why an associate may decline to sell one. That makes penny hunting a hobby, not a savings plan.
If you do want to look:
- Be polite and expect a no. Store staff can decline to sell an item that is meant to be removed.
- Look in clearance areas. Penny reports almost always involve items already on clearance.
- Do not count on it for a project. If you need the item, buy it at the clearance price.
The savings that Home Depot actually promises in writing, price match, price adjustment and returns, are covered below and are worth far more over a year than penny finds.
Clearance tags and price endings explained
Home Depot's online clearance pages show the current price, the crossed-out "Was" price and how much you save, such as a vanity marked down 60%. Home Depot does not publish what the cents at the end of a clearance price mean, so any chart of price endings online is a shopper's guess.

How to shop clearance well without guessing:
- Check the clearance pages online first. Home Depot's Clearance section shows the "Was" price and the percent saved, so you can see the real markdown before you drive to a store.
- Compare with the regular price elsewhere. A 30% markdown on an item Lowe's sells for less is not a deal.
- Ask whether clearance can be returned. Most items follow the normal 90-day return policy, but check before you buy a large item.
- Use price adjustment if it drops further. If Home Depot's price falls within 30 days of your purchase, you can ask for the difference.
The clearance price is the price. If you need the item now, the bird in the hand beats waiting for a markdown that may never come, because another shopper can buy it first.
Does Home Depot price match? Rules, Lowe's and Amazon
Yes. Home Depot matches a lower price on an identical item, same brand, model and size, that a competitor has in stock and can sell and ship to you. It names Lowe's, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target as online competitors, as long as the item is sold and fulfilled by that retailer, not a marketplace seller.
| Price match rule | What Home Depot says, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Item | Identical brand, model and size; for online matches, color too |
| Stock | The competitor must have it in stock at the lower price |
| Named online competitors | Lowe's, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target, sold and fulfilled by that retailer |
| Not matched | Auction, marketplace and membership sites such as eBay, Wayfair, Costco and Sam's Club |
| In store | Show the ad, printout or web page to the cashier at checkout |
| Online | Live Chat or call 1-800-430-3376 with the Internet number and the competitor's product details |
Home Depot's price match page lists these rules (Home Depot price match, checked October 2026). So yes, Home Depot matches Amazon and Lowe's, but only when Amazon or Lowe's sells the item itself and has it in stock.
Tips that make a match go smoothly:
- Bring the model number. Brand, model and size must match exactly.
- Show a live page, not an old screenshot. The competitor's price has to be current.
- Check the delivered price. If delivery costs differ, the comparison may change.
- Do it before you pay. Matching at checkout is simpler than asking afterward.
Price adjustment after you buy
If Home Depot's own price drops after you buy, you can ask for the difference within 30 days of your purchase. Bring your receipt or order number and proof of the lower price, and ask at a store or through Customer Support. If approved, the refund usually goes back to your original payment method.
How to claim a price adjustment:
- Confirm the drop. The lower price must be on homedepot.com or at a competitor Home Depot matches.
- Gather proof. Your receipt or order number, plus a screenshot or link showing the lower price.
- Contact Home Depot. In store at the service desk, by Live Chat or by phone.
- Get the refund. Usually to your original payment method.
| Policy | Window |
|---|---|
| Price adjustment on Home Depot's own price drops | 30 days from purchase |
| Price match on a competitor's lower price | At the time you buy |
Set a reminder for 30 days after any big purchase, such as an appliance or a tool set, and check the price once before the window closes. The seasonal events below are when prices most often drop.
Home Depot vs Lowe's: price match and price promises
Home Depot and Lowe's both match a lower price on an identical in-stock item, and both match Amazon only when Amazon sells the item itself. The differences are in the details: Lowe's includes shipping or delivery cost in the comparison, and Home Depot spells out a 30-day window for adjustments on its own price drops.
| Policy | Home Depot | Lowe's |
|---|---|---|
| Matches an identical in-stock item | Yes | Yes |
| Matches Amazon | Only items sold by Amazon | Only items sold by Amazon.com |
| Marketplace and auction sites | Not matched | Not matched |
| Membership warehouse prices | Costco and Sam's Club not matched | Volume and wholesale pricing not matched |
| Shipping in the comparison | Not stated | Item price plus shipping or delivery cost |
| Price drop after you buy | Adjustment within 30 days | Validated by chat or phone at 1-877-465-6937 |
Lowe's terms come from its Lowest Price Guarantee page (Lowe's Lowest Price Guarantee, checked October 2026). In practice, price check both stores before a big purchase. If one is lower, either buy there or ask the other to match, and the military discount can still apply on top at either store, subject to each store's rules.
The Home Depot credit card: what it actually saves
The Home Depot Consumer Credit Card does not give a percentage off everyday purchases. Its main benefits are six months of everyday financing on purchases of $299 or more and a one-year return window. Both help on big projects, but only if you pay the balance in full before the promotion ends.
| Card benefit, as of October 2026 | Detail |
|---|---|
| Everyday financing | 6 months on purchases of $299 or more |
| Returns | One year to make returns, under the return policy |
| Interest | Charged from the purchase date if the balance is not paid in full within the promotional period |
| APR | Listed at 17.99% to 29.99% on Home Depot's credit page |
Home Depot's credit center lists these terms, and the card agreement governs your actual rate (Home Depot credit center). The financing is deferred interest: miss the deadline by a day and you pay interest back to the purchase date. Use it only for a planned purchase you can pay off on schedule.
Military and veteran discount: who qualifies, how to register
Home Depot gives a 10% discount on eligible purchases to active duty service members, veterans and their spouses, in stores and online. You verify your status once through a third-party service, and Home Depot's store pages say the discount applies up to $400 each year. Active military and veterans also get 15% off moving truck rentals.
How to use it:
- Register once. Verify through Home Depot's military page; it points to SheerID for help with registration.
- In store: scan the Virtual ID in the Home Depot app, or enter your phone number at the register.
- Online: sign in to your Home Depot account before you check out.
- Moving trucks: show valid military ID or proof of veteran status at pickup for 15% off a truck rental.
Our full military discounts list compares Home Depot with Lowe's, whose 10% has no yearly cap but excludes lumber and major appliances.
Pro Xtra, Special Buy of the Day and appliance sales
Home Depot's ongoing deals are Pro Xtra, a free loyalty program aimed at contractors with Perks and volume pricing; the Special Buy of the Day, a set of one-day online deals; and appliance savings, including free delivery on appliance purchases of $396 or more. Special Buy of the Day. Home Depot posts daily deals on select appliances, home decor and home improvement items. They are online only, while supplies last, and reset every morning at 3 AM ET (Special Buy of the Day, checked October 2026). Free delivery on these deals excludes major appliances.

A Home Depot savings checklist for a big project
A kitchen, deck or bathroom project is where Home Depot's policies add up, because the materials list is long and prices move while you work. Planning the purchase in the right order, from price checks to the return of leftovers, can save more than any single coupon.
- Make the full materials list first, with model numbers, so you can price match exact items.
- Price check Lowe's and the other named competitors. Home Depot matches identical in-stock items sold by Lowe's, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target.
- Register for the military discount if you or your spouse served. It takes 10% off eligible purchases, up to $400 a year.
- Join Pro Xtra for large orders. It is free, and volume and bulk pricing cover items such as drywall, plywood and shingles.
- Check the Special Buy of the Day for tools and fixtures on your list. Deals change every morning at 3 AM ET.
- Group appliances into one order of $396 or more for free delivery.
- Set a 30-day reminder. If any price drops within 30 days, ask for a price adjustment.
- Return unused materials within 90 days. Most items come back for a refund with proof of purchase, so buy a little extra and return what you do not use.
| Project cost driver | The policy that helps |
|---|---|
| Big-ticket appliances | Price match plus free delivery at $396 |
| Bulk materials | Pro Xtra volume and bulk pricing |
| Tools | Special Buy of the Day and seasonal sales |
| Prices that drop after you buy | 30-day price adjustment |
| Leftover materials | 90-day returns with proof of purchase |
| Service members and veterans | 10% military discount |
Keep every receipt in one folder or in your Home Depot account. Price adjustments, returns and Pro Xtra purchase tracking all depend on proof of purchase.
Black Friday and Spring Black Friday
Home Depot runs two big sales: Spring Black Friday in April for lawn, garden and outdoor power equipment, and its holiday Black Friday sale in November. Spring Black Friday 2026 ran April 9 to 22. Home Depot had not announced its Black Friday 2026 dates when we checked in mid October 2026.
| Event | 2025 | 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Black Friday | April 3 to 16, 2025, in stores and online | April 9 to 22, 2026 |
| Spring Deal Days | April 24 to May 7, 2025 | Not confirmed |
| Black Friday | Late November | Not announced as of mid October 2026 |
The spring dates come from Home Depot's own press releases (Spring Black Friday 2025). For the November sale, two policies matter more than the ad:
- Price match works on identical in-stock items from Lowe's, Amazon, Walmart and the other named retailers, so check their Black Friday prices too.
- Price adjustment covers 30 days, so if you buy a tool early in November and the price drops on Black Friday, ask for the difference.
Our Black Friday shopping plan covers price tracking and holiday return windows at every big store, and our Home Depot coupons page lists current offers.
Return policy in short
Most Home Depot purchases can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. Furniture, TVs and computers, paint sprayers, tractors, framing and roofing compressors, and gas-powered items have a 30-day window and must be unused in their original packaging. Purchases on a Home Depot consumer or commercial card get 365 days, with exceptions.
| Item | Return window, as of October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Most merchandise | 90 days with proof of purchase |
| Furniture, consumer electronics, paint sprayers, gas-powered items | 30 days, unused, original packaging |
| Portable gas generators | A shorter window; check the policy before you buy |
| Whole-house and stationary generators | Not returnable |
| Purchases on a Home Depot card | 365 days, with exceptions |
Home Depot's return policy page lists these windows (Home Depot return policy, checked October 2026). Keep the receipt or order email, and for large items, keep the box until you are sure, because the 30-day items must come back in original packaging. Our guide on how to stack coupons explains how store policies like these fit with coupons at other big stores.
Home Depot ways to save FAQ
Are Home Depot penny items real?
Shoppers report finding them, but Home Depot does not acknowledge them. Its website has no penny list or penny policy, and nothing says a store must sell an item that rings up at one cent. Treat penny items as a rare long shot, and rely on Home Depot's written price match and price adjustment policies for real savings.
Does Home Depot price match Amazon?
Yes, when Amazon sells and ships the item itself and has it in stock. Home Depot matches identical items, same brand, model and size, from Lowe's, Menards, Amazon, Walmart, Best Buy and Target, as of October 2026. It does not match marketplace sellers or sites such as eBay, Wayfair, Costco and Sam's Club.
Does Home Depot price match Lowe's?
Yes. Lowe's is one of the competitors Home Depot names in its price match policy. The item must be identical in brand, model and size, and Lowe's must have it in stock at the lower price. In store, show the ad or web page to the cashier, and online, use Live Chat or call 1-800-430-3376.
What is the Home Depot return policy?
Most items can be returned within 90 days with proof of purchase. Furniture, consumer electronics, paint sprayers and gas-powered items have 30 days and must be unused in original packaging, as of October 2026. Purchases on a Home Depot consumer or commercial card get 365 days, with exceptions, and whole-house generators cannot be returned.
Does Home Depot have a military discount?
Yes. Home Depot gives 10% off eligible purchases to active duty service members, veterans and their spouses, in stores and online, up to $400 a year according to its store pages. You register once through a third-party verification service, then scan your Virtual ID in the app or enter your phone number at checkout.
What is the Home Depot Special Buy of the Day?
It is a set of one-day online deals on select appliances, home decor and home improvement items. Deals reset every morning at 3 AM ET, are available online only while supplies last, and free delivery on them excludes major appliances, as of October 2026.
