Buying furniture online opens up huge selection and frequent sales, but shipping, returns and quality are harder to judge. Here is how to get it right.
Measure everything first
Measure the room, doorways, stairwells and elevator. A sofa that does not fit through the door is the most expensive mistake in furniture shopping, because large-item returns can be costly or limited.
Time your purchase
- Major sale events: online home retailers run big annual sales. Wayfair's biggest is Way Day.
- Holiday weekends: Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Labor Day are traditional furniture sale periods.
- New collections: when stores bring in new lines, older styles get marked down.
Read reviews the smart way
- Filter reviews that include customer photos.
- Look for comments about assembly, cushion firmness and how the piece holds up after months.
- Check the materials list: solid wood and metal frames usually outlast particleboard.
Factor in the total cost
Shipping, delivery fees and assembly can change the real price. Some items ship free, while larger items may have delivery charges. Compare the final checkout total, not just the sticker price.
Save on decor
Textiles, lighting and wall art change a room the most for the least money. Swap cushions and throws seasonally, use warm bulbs, and add one statement lamp before you buy new furniture.
Be careful with "buy now, pay later" on furniture: it is convenient, but make sure the payments fit your budget before you commit.
