Senior discounts still exist, but the age, the amount and the day differ from one business to the next, and many vary by location. Every discount on this senior discounts list was checked on the company's own website in October 2026, and we left out any we could not confirm. Pair it with our money saving tips to make a fixed income go further.
At what age do senior discounts start?
Senior discounts start at 55 at some stores and restaurants, but the age varies by business. Ross and IHOP start at 55, Kohl's at 60, the National Park Service Senior Pass at 62, and Amtrak and New Seasons Market at 65. AARP membership, which comes with many restaurant and travel discounts, is open to anyone 18 or older.
These age discounts were confirmed on each company's own site in October 2026:
| Age | Senior deals that start at this age |
|---|---|
| 55 and older | Ross 55+ Tuesday Discount; IHOP 55+ menu |
| 60 and older | Kohl's senior discount on Wednesdays |
| 62 and older | National Park Service Senior Pass |
| 65 and older | Amtrak senior fares; New Seasons Market Wisdom Wednesdays; Uncle Giuseppe's senior day |
| 18 and older | AARP membership |
The best senior discounts are the ones you use often. A weekly grocery discount or a monthly restaurant deal saves more over a year than a large discount you use once.
Grocery store senior discounts
Grocery store senior discounts are harder to find than most lists suggest. We confirmed three on the stores' own sites in October 2026: New Seasons Market (65 and older, 10% on Wednesdays), Gristedes (an extra 10% on Tuesdays) and Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace (65 and older, Wednesdays). Ask at customer service, because some stores set discounts locally.
| Store | Age | Discount | Day | How it works |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| New Seasons Market | 65+ | 10% off most items | Wednesday (Wisdom Wednesdays) | In store only; online orders cannot apply it |
| Gristedes | Not stated on its site | Extra 10% off | Tuesday | Ask in store which age qualifies |
| Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace | 65+ | Not stated on its site | Wednesday | Show ID at customer service to be added; excludes sale items |
Many online lists name more grocery chains. Check the chain's own website or ask at the service desk before you plan a trip around one, because these programs change.
Retail and department store senior discounts
The two biggest retail senior discounts we confirmed are Kohl's, which takes 15% off qualifying purchases every Wednesday in store for shoppers 60 and older, and Ross Dress for Less, which takes 10% off on Tuesdays for shoppers 55 and older. Both work in store, and both may ask you for proof of age.
Kohl's
According to Kohl's FAQ (checked October 2026), the senior discount:
- Is 15% off qualifying purchases on Wednesdays, in store only, for customers 60 or older.
- Is limited to one per customer, and you should bring identification to verify your age.
- Applies after dollar-off coupons, including Kohl's Cash, and cannot be combined with other percent-off coupons.
- Excludes gift cards, Sephora at Kohl's, Kohl's Cares items and other coupon-ineligible brands.
Ross Dress for Less
Ross calls it the 55+ Tuesday Discount: 10% off purchases made on Tuesday for customers 55 or older. You must tell the associate at checkout, you may be asked for ID, and you must be present to get it (Ross FAQ, checked October 2026).
Kohl's and Ross are the national retailers on our list of stores with senior discounts that we could confirm on their own sites. For everyday low prices without an age limit, see our guide to discount stores.
Restaurant senior discounts
The most dependable restaurant senior discounts are 55+ menus and AARP member deals. IHOP offers a 55+ menu with lower prices, and AARP members get 15% off at Denny's, 15% off dine-in orders at Cicis Pizza, and 10% off at Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's Italian Grill, among others, at participating locations.
| Restaurant | Deal | Who qualifies | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| IHOP | 55+ menu with lower prices | Guests 55 and older | Ask for the 55+ menu |
| Denny's | 15% off dine-in and pickup orders | AARP members | Up to $10 off; excludes alcohol, the Everyday Value Slam, Super Slam and online orders; show your AARP card |
| Cicis Pizza | 15% off dine-in orders every day, including the buffet | AARP members | Participating locations |
| Outback Steakhouse | 10% off dine-in or curbside carryout ordered by phone | AARP members | Participating locations |
| Carrabba's Italian Grill | 10% off dine-in or curbside carryout ordered by phone | AARP members | Participating locations |
| Papa John's | 20% off regular menu prices | AARP members | Online orders |
The IHOP 55+ menu is described on IHOP's own restaurant pages, and the AARP deals come from AARP's restaurant benefits page and its Denny's offer terms (AARP restaurant discounts, checked October 2026). AARP's restaurant page listed 22 national restaurant offers in October 2026.
Travel and entertainment senior discounts
The best travel senior discount is the National Park Service Senior Pass: $80 for life or $20 a year for US citizens and permanent residents 62 and older, covering entrance fees at federal recreation sites. Amtrak takes 10% off most rail fares for travelers 65 and older. AARP adds car rental, cruise and ticket savings.
National Park Service Senior Pass
According to the National Park Service (checked October 2026):
- It costs $80 for a lifetime pass or $20 for an annual pass, for US citizens and permanent residents 62 and older.
- It covers entrance fees and standard amenity fees at federal recreation sites, and may give 50% off some amenity fees such as camping, swimming and boat launches.
- It generally does not cover special permit fees or fees charged by concessioners.
- You can buy it in person at more than 1,000 federal recreation sites, online through the USGS Online Store (delivery can take up to three weeks), or as a digital pass on Recreation.gov (NPS passes).
Do the math: the lifetime pass costs the same as four annual passes, so it pays off if you plan to use it for more than four years.
Amtrak
Amtrak gives travelers 65 and older 10% off most rail fares on most trains (60 and older on cross-border VIA Rail Canada services). The discount does not apply to sleeping accommodation charges, cannot be combined with other discounts, and requires valid proof of age when you buy and on board (Amtrak, checked October 2026).
Travel and entertainment through AARP
AARP's member benefits pages listed these offers in October 2026:
- Car rentals: up to 35% off base rates with Pay Now at Avis and at Budget.
- Movie tickets: up to 25% off e-tickets at select theater chains.
- Theme parks: up to $60 off Walt Disney World tickets and up to $35 off Disneyland Resort tickets.
- Shows: up to 30% off Cirque du Soleil shows.
Membership discounts (AARP and others)
AARP is the best known membership for senior discounts. It costs $15 for the first year with automatic renewal, then $20 a year, and anyone 18 or older can join. AMAC is a smaller alternative at $17 a year with a spouse included. Join one only if you will use its discounts several times a year.
AARP
As of October 2026, AARP's membership page lists restaurant discounts of up to 15% at more than 7,000 locations, travel and car rental savings, a free second membership for someone in your household, and a subscription to AARP The Magazine (AARP membership).
Is it worth it? Two Denny's meals that each hit the $10 maximum discount save $20, which covers a full year of membership at the regular price.
AMAC
AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens, costs $17 a year with a spouse included, $44 for three years or $64 for five years, according to its join page (checked October 2026). Compare its partner discounts with AARP's before you pay for both.
How to ask for a senior discount
Ask before you pay, not after. Say "Do you offer a senior discount?" at the register or when you order, carry a photo ID that shows your birth date, and check which day the discount runs. Many senior discounts apply only in store, on one day a week, and cannot be combined with other percent-off coupons.
- Ask every time. Some details, such as the age at Gristedes, are only explained in store.
- Carry ID. Kohl's asks you to bring identification, Ross may ask for ID, and Amtrak requires proof of age.
- Shop on the right day. Plan errands around Tuesdays at Ross and Gristedes and Wednesdays at Kohl's, New Seasons and Uncle Giuseppe's.
- Compare it with the sale. At Kohl's, dollar-off coupons and Kohl's Cash apply first, but other percent-off coupons cannot be added, so use whichever saves more.
- Look for online senior discounts. They are rare: Kohl's and New Seasons apply theirs in store only. AARP's Papa John's deal works on online orders, and AARP's travel center lists up to 10% off select hotels booked online.
Senior discounts work best alongside free store rewards programs and a simple plan for household money saving tips.
