Electronics prices are not random. They move with product launches, holidays and the big retail sale events. Knowing the calendar can save you a lot on a single purchase.

The electronics price calendar

  • January–February: TVs drop as stores clear older models before new ones arrive in spring. Big-game sales add extra deals.
  • Spring: New TV and laptop models launch, which pushes last year's models down.
  • July: Mid-summer sales from major retailers are strong for headphones, smart-home gear and tablets.
  • Back-to-school (July–September): Laptops and accessories for students are heavily promoted.
  • November: Black Friday and Cyber Monday bring the deepest discounts of the year on TVs, laptops, headphones and gaming bundles.

When to wait

If a new version of a product is announced, wait. The previous model usually gets cheaper and is often almost as good. Also avoid buying the newest phone or console at launch if price is your priority.

Consider open-box and refurbished

Open-box items are returns that have been inspected and resold at a discount. Many come with the same warranty as new. Manufacturer-refurbished products can be an even better value. Check:

  1. The warranty length and who provides it.
  2. The return window.
  3. Whether all accessories are included.

Price matching and price drops

Some retailers match competitors' prices on identical items, and some offer a price adjustment if the price drops shortly after you buy. Policies change, so check the current terms before you rely on them.

Our pick for big electronics

Best Buy runs frequent sales across TVs, laptops and appliances, and its membership program adds member-only deals. Compare its price with the manufacturer's own store before you buy.
