You can get free stuff online without paying a cent, as long as you know where real freebies come from and which offers are traps. This guide covers the freebie websites worth using, free birthday rewards, free food, free apps and the warning signs of a scam. It is part of our money saving tips series.
Is free stuff online real? How freebies work
Yes, free stuff online is real, but it comes from three places: neighbors giving away things they no longer need, brands paying for your attention, and rewards programs paying for your loyalty. You rarely pay money. You pay with your email address, your time, a trip to pick something up, or a purchase.
Most online freebies fall into one of these groups:
- Community giving. Neighbors post furniture, clothes, toys and household items on local giving groups. Everything is free, and you pick it up.
- Brand marketing. Brands send samples and birthday gifts so you try their products and stay on their email list. Our guide to free samples by mail covers sample sites in detail.
- Rewards programs. Stores and apps give points, birthday gifts and member perks for signing up and using them.
There is no freebies shop or freebies store that hands out products for nothing. If a site calls itself one and asks for card details, a shipping fee or a long survey before anything arrives, treat it as a scam until proven otherwise.
Best legit freebie websites
The best freebie websites are The Freecycle Network and the Buy Nothing Project for free household items from neighbors, the Craigslist free stuff section for larger items, and Hip2Save and The Krazy Coupon Lady for brand freebies. Microsoft Rewards is the simplest way to earn free gift cards. All six are free to use.

| The Freecycle Network | Items neighbors give away | Free membership | Join your local town group, reply to offers or post a wanted ad, then pick up | Furniture and household items |
| Buy Nothing Project | Goods and services gifted by neighbors | Free | Join your local group in the Buy Nothing app or on Facebook, then ask or give | Everyday items and kids' gear |
| Craigslist free stuff | Items people give away near you | Free to browse | Open your city's Craigslist site and choose the free stuff category | Big items you can haul away |

Details were checked on each site in October 2026. Freecycle's homepage lists 12,305,148 members in 5,333 local towns, says membership is always free, and says local groups are moderated by volunteers. The Buy Nothing Project describes itself as the world's largest free goods platform and runs its local groups through its app and on Facebook.
Coupon and deal sites work differently: they help you pay less rather than nothing. Compare them in our ranking of the best deal websites.
Free stuff from brands and stores
Brands and stores give away free stuff to win your loyalty: free drinks, samples, birthday gifts and free workshops. Most offers need a free membership in the store's rewards program and an email address. Join only the programs at stores you already use, so the freebies save you money instead of pulling you into extra purchases.
IKEA Family
IKEA Family is free to join. As of October 2026, IKEA lists these member perks on its US site: free coffee and tea every time you visit a store, a birthday treat, free in-store workshops and events, and 90 day price protection that refunds the difference if a price drops after you buy (IKEA Family).
Free in-store events
Stores run free events for kids and families, and freebie blogs collect them in one place. In the first week of October 2026 alone, Hip2Save posted free events at Lowe's, Barnes & Noble and Tractor Supply. Check the store's own event page before you go, because spots and supplies are limited.
Free gifts online through rewards
Free gifts online usually come from rewards programs, not from random giveaway pages. A free store rewards program adds birthday gifts, member prices and points at no cost. Our guide to store rewards programs shows which ones are worth joining.
Free birthday rewards
Free birthday rewards are the easiest freebies to get: join a rewards program, add your birthday to your profile, and the gift appears in your account. Sign up early, because some programs set a deadline. Starbucks Rewards, for example, only gives the birthday reward to members who joined at least seven days before their birthday.
| Program | What you get | Who qualifies | How to claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starbucks Rewards | One free handcrafted drink, food item or bottled drink | Members who join at least 7 days before their birthday, add it to their account and make at least one Star earning purchase before it each year | Scan the app barcode; Green members redeem on the birthday, Gold within 7 days, Reserve within 30 days |
| Ulta Beauty Rewards | A birthday gift, plus 2x points on purchases in your birthday month | All members with a birthday in their profile, while supplies last | Free in store with no purchase; online and pickup orders need a product purchase |
| IKEA Family | A birthday treat | IKEA Family members | Join free on the IKEA site |
| My Cold Stone Club Rewards | A birthday reward | Club members | Loads 7 days before your birthday and is valid for two weeks, in store or online |
Terms were checked in October 2026: the Starbucks Rewards terms are dated March 10, 2026 and the Ulta Beauty Rewards terms were last updated August 16, 2026. Birthday gifts change often, so read the current terms before your birthday month.
For beauty birthday gifts, our Ulta Rewards points chart explains how the Ulta program works, and Sephora vs. Ulta beauty rewards compares the two programs. For sales beyond birthdays, see the best beauty deals.
Free food and drink offers
Free food online offers come from restaurant rewards apps, birthday rewards and store perks, and food banks give free groceries to anyone who needs them. The quickest wins are a free birthday drink or dessert and member perks such as free coffee and tea at IKEA. Check each app's offers tab before you order.
- Birthday food and drinks. Starbucks Rewards and My Cold Stone Club Rewards both give birthday rewards (see the table above).
- Store perks. IKEA Family members get free coffee and tea when they visit an IKEA store.
- Restaurant apps. Restaurants post their app deals in the app's offers or rewards tab. Install the apps for places you already eat, and delete the ones you never use.
- Food banks. If you need groceries, Feeding America's food bank finder lets you enter your ZIP code to find food banks in its network. Feeding America explains that a food pantry is where people can get free food (checked October 2026).
Freebie apps worth installing
The freebie apps worth installing are the Buy Nothing app for free items from neighbors, Libby and Kanopy for free books and films with a library card, Microsoft Rewards for gift cards, and the rewards apps of stores you already use. Each one is free and gives you something of real value without a purchase.
- Buy Nothing. The Buy Nothing app is available on iOS, Android and the web, and it connects you to your local gift group.
- Libby. Libby, the library reading app from OverDrive, lets you borrow ebooks, audiobooks and magazines free with a card from a participating library.
- Kanopy. Kanopy streams films and series free and ad free when you sign up with a public library card or university login (Kanopy, checked October 2026).
- Microsoft Rewards. Points for Bing searches and daily activities add up to gift cards.
- Store rewards apps. The Starbucks app, for example, holds your birthday reward barcode.
Be careful with free app shopping offers that promise a free gift for new users. Read what you must do to earn it. If the answer is inviting friends, installing other apps or paying for shipping, the gift is not really free.
How to spot freebie scams
A freebie is a scam if it asks you to pay to claim it, asks for your bank or card details to receive a prize, or signs you up for a paid plan you did not choose. Real freebies cost nothing to collect. When an offer asks for money or financial details first, close the page and do not reply.
The Federal Trade Commission lists these warning signs (checked October 2026):
- You have to pay to get a prize. The FTC says that if you have to pay to get your prize, it is a scam, and that paying to improve your odds is a scam too (FTC on prize scams).
- You have to give financial or personal information to receive a prize.
- A "free trial" needs your card number. The FTC explains that this lets the company charge you if you do not cancel before the trial ends, so put the end date in your calendar (FTC on free trials).
- Boxes are already checked at sign up. A pre-checked box can give the company permission to keep charging you after the trial.
If you cannot cancel a trial, the FTC suggests calling your credit card company and asking it to stop the payments. Report scams and unwanted charges at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
For local pickups, meet in a public place or bring someone with you, and leave if anything feels wrong. To get freebies without flooding your main inbox, use a separate email address for sign ups.
Free stuff online FAQ
What websites give free stuff?
The Freecycle Network and the Buy Nothing Project are the best websites for free stuff from neighbors, and both are free to join. The Craigslist free stuff section lists bigger items near you. For brand freebies and samples, Hip2Save and The Krazy Coupon Lady post new offers. Microsoft Rewards gives free gift cards for points you earn by searching with Bing.
How do I get free stuff without paying shipping?
Choose freebies you collect in person or use online. Freecycle, Buy Nothing and the Craigslist free stuff section are local pickup, so there is no shipping. Ulta's birthday gift needs no purchase when you redeem it in store. Library apps like Libby and Kanopy are digital, so nothing ships at all. Skip any free offer that charges a shipping fee.
Are freebie sites safe?
The sites in this guide are free to use and do not ask for payment. The risk comes from fake giveaways: the FTC says that if you have to pay to get a prize, or hand over financial details, it is a scam. Use a separate email for sign ups, read free trial terms, and meet in a public place for local pickups.
